According to Deloitte, Premier League clubs spent 710 million on transfers this year, 485 million of which was spent during the recently shut summer window. That tops the previous record spending of 675 million in 2008 (the year Sheikh Mansour bought Man City).
If you find that be a little sickening, especially in such difficult economic times, then don't blame Everton because they contributed exactly 0 to that total. Though they did bring in Denis Stracqualursi from Tigre and Royston Drenthe from Real Madrid on season-long loans just before the window shut, they made that 0 even more depressing for their fans by selling off Yakubu, Jermaine Beckford and Mikel Arteta. According to EvertonTime.com, the cash-strapped club has now gone exactly two years without buying a new player (not including youth signings, loans or free transfers).
So if you happen to see David Moyes in street, be sure to give him a lollipop and a pat on the back and tell him that maybe one day a foreign prince will buy his club, too.
Here's the complete breakdown of who spent what this summer (from our friends at Eurosport)...
Something else worth noting: Arsenal ended up spending more than Man United.
