The outrage of Newcastle fans over the renaming of St. James' Park to Sports Direct Stadium (for free!) has claimed its first victim: a brick.
Eleven years ago, Newcastle fan (and member of the creatively titled "Mike Ashley Out" campaign) Graeme Cansdale bought a 50 commemorative brick in St. James' Way as a birthday gift to his father. And now that the club has decided to change the 119-year-old name of the stadium, Cansdale has decided to take his brick back in protest.
From the BBC:
He said he handed in a letter to the managing director, Derek Llambias, warning him the brick was about to be removed, was careful not to damage surrounding bricks and filled the hole with a replacement brick.
He stresses the brick belongs to him: "I've actually reclaimed my own property. It has a certificate of ownership.
"Now that St James' Park no longer exists I think I've every right to protect my property."
Mr Cansdale said he would not return the brick while owner Mike Ashley remained at the club.
If more Newcastle fans follow Graeme's lead, they might have a significant movement. Or they might just be providing Ashley with free labor and clearing the path for the new Sports Direct Walkway/Quickshop.
The Sun has more pictures of Cansdale and his brick (including one of him kneeling next to the guy who actually made the switch).
